"Why Don't Young People Vote?" Response
In the article Why Don't Young People Vote by The Huffington Post the author seeks address the question put forth in the title of why there is such a high level of apathy towards politics by young voters. Specifically why Generation Y(The Millennials) seem so averse to politics when they have more resources than ever before to educate themselves with things like videos, blogs, and websites to research candidates on the internet. Additionally there are more means of contacting government representatives, and making one's voice heard now than ever as well. Anyone born from 1980 to the early 2000s fits in the Millennial category so I am definitely a part of that generational group. As to what the author says, I agree with her view on our generations apathy towards politics. Last year I volunteered for a few hours to get people to vote, and it was fairly surprising how many college students said they weren't voting because neither side was good enough or that their vote did not matter. The Presidential Election last year was a more entertainment than legitimate politics, and both sides got a little overzealous about their party winning than actually focusing on the issues. I think the author makes some solid conclusions as to why political apathy is at an all time high with young voters. They don't feel represented or like their vote matters, and politics in general haven't exactly evolved to fit the current voting populations needs, which is a problem considering we are the future.
